The New M-Class
When I first saw the 2006 Mercedes-Benz M-Class unveiled at the auto show in Detroit last January, it looked like it had received a slight refresh - nothing worth talking about. After a few days with the ML350, I find that I was completely wrong. At first glance it does look the same as the outgoing 2005 model. But upon closer inspection, you find that the new M-Class has a bolder, larger grille and a much sleeker profile. Inside is completely redesigned, and looks great. The annoying cupholder that use to be on the far left of the dashboard next to the door is gone - it always felt like your drink would go flying out the window. Gauges are clear and the center console is much more usable. With better cupholders, for those who care. Six inches longer and three inches wider than the older version, the new M-Class is much roomier inside, and cargo space is noticeably larger. But its not just looks that set this '06 Benz apart from its predecessor. Under the sleek new skin is a new unibody platform, with new suspension, a more powerful choice of engines and a unique 7-speed automatic transmission. The ML350 puts out 268 horsepower, while the top of the line ML500 (until the ML55 comes out) gets a 302 horsepower V8. Handling of the older M-Class was never terribly good. Even the high-performance ML55 was a little scary at high speed. Not with the new one. Performance and handling are really impressive in the new M-Class - much better than I ever expected. A nice surprise. Interface for the nav system is a bit better, but typical of Mercedes-Benz, the operation of the radio and climate controls is quite confusing and more trouble than its worth. One other complaint - the transmission is operated via a small stalk sticking out of the right side of the steering column. Similar to the BMW 7-Series, the lever is raised up for reverse, down for drive, and a button on the end is pressed to put the car in Park. In my first drive, a few rain drops hit the windshield. Thinking I was operating the wipers, I put the car in neutral instead. Annoying when your about to accelerate onto the freeway. Overall, major improvements to this SUV - looks good, more room, and much more fun to drive. -- Perry Stern
